Traditional Marquesan Marriage Ceremony
The couple is prepared separately with ancient oils and dressed in traditional costume with leis and crowns of flowers and herbs. Escorted by warriors, the couple is taken to an ancient site where the group begins the dancing and the priest the chants of the ceremony. The priest wraps the pair in a tapa quilt symbolizing their union. The couple is then carrier on high by the warriors and taken to the site of the himaa. The himaa (roast pig in the ground) is carried into the restaurant followed by the bride and groom, and the couple is then seated in the place of honor. The dance group performs while the meal is served along with champagne.
